Local histórico

Madrasa Ben Youssef

Madrasa Ben Youssef is a former Islamic school in the medina of Marrakech, on Rue Assouel.

Madrasa Ben Youssef is a former Islamic school in the medina of Marrakech, on Rue Assouel. Its central courtyard brings together patterned zellige tiles, carved stucco and cedar wood, with a pool at the centre and student rooms arranged around it. Walk through the preserved rooms to see how the school was laid out, then look closely at the details in the prayer hall and archways. The building served students for centuries and is now open as a historic site.

Madrasa Ben Youssef is a former Islamic college in Marrakech’s medina, close to the mosque that shares its name. The school’s history reaches back to the 14th century, while much of the building seen today dates to its rebuilding under the Saadian ruler Abdallah al-Ghalib in the 16th century. It served as a place of study for centuries and closed as a school in 1960.

At its height, the college housed students who came to study religious subjects and law. Small rooms around the courtyard were their living quarters. Walking through them gives a sense of the building’s practical purpose alongside its formal architecture.

What to look for in the architecture

The central courtyard is the main point of orientation. A pool sits at its centre, surrounded by walls decorated with zellige, the Moroccan mosaic tilework. Look up to see the student rooms above the courtyard, then take time with the carved stucco and cedar details around the arches, doors and windows.

The prayer hall has three naves separated by marble pillars. Its horseshoe arch and carved ornament are among the details to notice at close range. Across the building, geometric patterns and decorative inscriptions sit alongside the woodwork and tile. The materials and repeated motifs reward a slower walk through the rooms and corridors.

Planning a thoughtful visit

There is little written interpretation inside, so a short read about the madrasa’s history before arriving can help put the rooms and architectural details in context. A guide is another option if you want more background on the building and its role as a school.

The courtyard and its symmetrical design draw people looking for photographs, and the site can become crowded as the morning goes on. Arriving around opening time gives you a quieter start. If a group gathers on your floor, move to another level and return later. The madrasa is a historic religious and educational site, so take care around its walls and ornament while exploring.
