Playa Principal

Playa Principal is the main beach of Puerto Escondido, in the centre of town on Bahía Principal.

Playa Principal is the main beach of Puerto Escondido, in the centre of town on Bahía Principal. It is a working beach as much as a swimming beach: fishing boats are drawn up along the sand, and local families come to swim, play and spend the day under the trees. In December and January the waves are good for bodyboarding and an easy swim. A parachute landing zone sits on one side of the beach, and the old streets behind it are a short walk away, with shops, cafés and seafood restaurants. Come in the morning to see the fishermen at work.

Fishing boats and the morning catch

Playa Principal
Playa Principal

Playa Principal is a working harbour as well as a beach. Early in the morning, fishermen launch their boats from the sand, and in the hours after they return with the day's catch. Part of the fish goes straight to the market, and part goes to the seafood restaurants along the beach.

In the morning, one of the fish sellers sets up a small blue tent on the beach and sells fish until the catch is gone. Watching the boats come in and the fish being sorted is the most rewarding part of an early visit.

Boats take up much of the sand, so look for an open stretch before you set up your towel. Keep clear of the boats while the crews are working.

Swimming, waves and the water

The waves are at their most lively in December and January. Bodyboarders and swimmers use the sheltered part of the bay, while surfers go to Zicatela, the main surf zone further along the coast.

The water is not as clear as at some other beaches in Puerto Escondido, so choose another beach if you want to snorkel. Puerto Angelito and Playa Manzanillo, both nearby, are the usual choices for that.

Playa Marinero lies in the same cove, so you can walk between the two beaches along the sand.

Around the beach

El Adoquín, the pedestrian street that runs beside the beach, is lined with shops, cafés and restaurants. After 6 PM it becomes an open-air night market, where vendors sell handcrafted black pottery from Oaxaca, fresh seafood tacos and local mezcal.

Free shade is available under the large trees near the end of the beach. Vendors walk the sand selling fresh fruit, coconut and ice cream, which makes a simple beach day easy to organise.

Boats in the bay can take you to other beaches in the area, and the water taxis, known as lanchas, link Playa Principal with the other coves.

Festivals and local traditions

The Marlin Fest is held here, with a cash prize for the fisherman who lands the largest marlin. In 2025 the festival brought many vendors and families to the beach, and the streets around it filled with stalls.

Each December the Blessing of the Fishes takes place, with a procession of boats across the bay. The beach is a place of ceremony as well as leisure, and visitors are welcome to watch quietly from the shore.

Some pilgrims who have visited the shrine to the Virgin of Juquila, one of the best-known Catholic shrines in the country, come to the beach afterwards. Please keep this in mind when you visit the boats and the church steps near the beach.
