Museo Tamayo is a contemporary art museum in Chapultepec Park, Mexico City. Painter Rufino Tamayo founded it in 1981 and gave it his own works along with a large collection of international contemporary art. Temporary shows often bring a contemporary and sometimes political edge, while Tamayo's paintings and sculptures remain central to the collection. The concrete building has open, light-filled galleries and an outdoor sculpture area for a quiet pause. Plan an hour or two, then walk about five minutes to the Modern Art Museum.
From Rufino Tamayo's gift to today's galleries

Rufino Tamayo, a painter born in Oaxaca, founded the museum in 1981. He donated his own works together with a large collection of international contemporary art, with the aim of showing 20th-century art to the public.
Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky designed the building. It is made of reinforced concrete and white marble, and it sits among the trees of Chapultepec Park, which makes its heavy materials feel less out of place than you might expect.
Tamayo was part of the Mexican muralist circle, but he was less strict than many of his peers and absorbed many European styles into his work. That mix is visible in the collection, which sets his paintings beside modern work from abroad.
Inside the galleries

The museum usually has at least two temporary exhibitions open, and sometimes three. Past programs have ranged from the work of forgotten Jewish women poets to retrospectives on artists such as the Chilean Juan Downey.
Look for the large tapestry by Raventos. The 'black' exhibit has been a standout for many visitors, treating black as a matter of depth and richness rather than emptiness, and it gives a useful way into color symbolism.
The galleries are spread across several levels, so plan to go up and down the building rather than covering one floor at a time.
The park, the restaurant and the shop
The museum sits in Chapultepec Park, next to the Museum of Anthropology and in front of Chapultepec Castle. A short walk away, the Modern Art Museum is a useful second stop for the same afternoon.
The restaurant overlooks the park and works well as a breakfast stop before you explore the park's sights.
The shop is worth a visit before you leave. It carries local makers, affordable souvenirs and a good selection of books.
