Little India Brickfields is a shopping and dining district along Jalan Tun Sambanthan, a short walk from KL Sentral.

Little India Brickfields is a shopping and dining district along Jalan Tun Sambanthan, a short walk from KL Sentral. Colorful arches mark the street, where shops sell sarees, kurtas, fabrics, bangles, jewelry, spices and everyday groceries. Stop to browse, pick up Indian snacks or sit down for banana leaf rice, dosa or thosai. The area also has a history tied to Kuala Lumpur’s brick-making industry and its railway hub. It suits travelers interested in Indian culture, food and shopping; if those are not on your list, there is less to see here.

Brickfields takes its name from the district’s brick-making past. After a fire and flood in 1881 destroyed wooden buildings in early Kuala Lumpur, the British administration called for more durable construction. Kapitan Yap Ah Loy established brickworks in the area, which became a center for making bricks.

The district later developed around transport, including the Malayan Railway depot. Workers from South India and Sri Lanka came to the area, and Brickfields grew into a center of Indian community life. KL Sentral now sits within the district, and the station makes Little India an easy detour for travelers passing through the city.

Jalan Tun Sambanthan is the main stretch to explore. Colorful arches line the road, while shops on both sides sell textiles, sarees, kurtas, bangles, jewelry, spices, groceries and other Indian goods. Music and festive decorations add color to the walk, and flower shops and food stalls bring more to browse.

Food is a central part of a visit. Look for banana leaf rice, dosa and thosai at the neighborhood’s Indian restaurants, or pick up snacks such as samosas. Seetha Ram is one named option for lunch or dessert. Saturday evenings are associated with food stalls, though the street can be crowded, so allow time to move at an easy pace.
