Deer Park

Deer Park sits within Perdana Botanical Gardens on Jalan Perdana in Kuala Lumpur.

Deer Park sits within Perdana Botanical Gardens on Jalan Perdana in Kuala Lumpur. The green paths, shady trees, small stream and bridges make the walk a draw in their own right, with deer including the tiny mouse deer, or kancil, in an enclosure. You can view the animals from above a bridge, but access is limited and close-up encounters are not guaranteed. Treat this as a short nature stop while exploring the gardens, rather than a full zoo visit.

The deer and their viewing point

Deer Park

Deer Park is a small animal enclosure inside Perdana Botanical Gardens. Several kinds of deer live here, including the mouse deer, also called the kancil or chevrotain. It is the smallest type of deer and is known for its pig-like features. Local folklore often features the kancil outsmarting trouble.

The animals can be viewed from a bridge above the enclosure. Access to the deer may be limited, so plan on watching from a distance rather than expecting a close encounter. The enclosure is modest in size, and the paths and greenery around it are a substantial part of the stop.

A walk through Perdana Botanical Gardens

Deer Park

The route to Deer Park passes through the gardens, with trees, flowers, bridges and a small stream along the way. Benches provide places to rest. The wider botanical garden area includes other attractions, among them the Orchid Garden, KL Bird Park, Butterfly Park and Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia.

There are stairs along the park paths, so a stroller or bicycle can be awkward to manage. The walk is more comfortable in cooler parts of the day. Bring drinking water and a hat if you are visiting with children, particularly when the route crosses open areas.
