Set in the Riga Dome Cathedral ensemble in the Old Town, the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation traces the city’s past through thousands of objects. Its collections span archaeology, weapons, silverware and decorative arts, with displays covering Riga’s history from 1201 to 1949. Look for the Silver Room’s collection of more than 300 jewels and the striking Column Hall. Room booklets in several languages help explain the exhibits, which are mostly traditional displays rather than interactive ones.

The museum began in 1773 as a private collection assembled by Riga doctor Nikolaus von Himsel. It is housed in the Riga Dome Cathedral ensemble, in the Old Town, and is among Europe’s oldest museums.

Its collections grew over the centuries into a substantial record of Latvia’s past. The museum presents Riga’s history through objects rather than relying on a single chronological display or story.

The displays cover the city’s history from 1201 to 1949. Archaeological finds sit alongside working tools, weapons, silverware and decorations, bringing different periods into view through the things people made and used.

The Silver Room holds more than 300 jewels. In the Cross Gallery, medieval objects include slabs and other historical pieces. The Column Hall is another notable space within the museum.

Following the displays

Exhibits are arranged in rooms dedicated to different eras of Riga’s history. Booklets in several languages are available in the rooms to help visitors understand the displays; English-language information is not necessarily printed on every object label.

The collection is extensive, so allow time to move through the rooms at your own pace. The museum has limited interactive activities designed specifically for children. A guided tour can add historical context, particularly for visitors who want to connect the objects with the city’s wider story.
