Art Museum RIGA BOURSE is a foreign-art museum on Doma Square in Riga’s Old Town, housed in a 19th-century building inspired by Venetian Renaissance palaces. Its collection spans European painting and Asian decorative arts, with displays that also include ancient Egyptian and Greek works. The richly detailed interiors are part of the visit: look for decorated ceilings, columns and the crystal fireplace, then take in the view of Doma Square from the upper-floor windows. Seasonal exhibitions bring different subjects to the first floor.

The museum occupies the former Riga Stock Exchange on Doma Square in the Old Town. Built between 1852 and 1855, the building takes inspiration from Venetian Renaissance palaces. Its size and room layout suited the display of the Latvian National Museum of Art’s foreign-art collections, and the museum opened here in 2011.

The architecture rewards attention between galleries. Look for the richly decorated ceilings, columns and crystal fireplace in the older exhibition rooms, as well as carved details throughout the building. The upper-floor windows look out over Doma Square.

Art from Europe and Asia

The collection brings together European painting and art from across Asia. Displays include Japanese, Chinese, Indian and Indonesian works, alongside porcelain and other decorative arts. Ancient Egyptian and Greek material is also represented. The range makes it possible to move between very different artistic traditions within one visit.

Temporary exhibitions change over time and are shown on the first floor. Past subjects have included Spanish painting, Japanese art and Chinese snuff bottles. A Spanish-art exhibition explored contrasting ideas of national identity in 19th-century Spain and the development of Catalan modernist painting around the turn of the 20th century. Check the current exhibition information before you go if you have a particular subject in mind.
