Set in a former red-brick factory in Sapporo Garden Park, the Sapporo Beer Museum traces the history of Sapporo beer and brewing in Japan. Exhibits include vintage bottles, brewing equipment, photographs and old advertisements, with English explanations available. The museum opened in 1987 and the company’s brewing story reaches back to 1876. Entry to the self-guided exhibits is free; paid guided tours and beer tastings give you more ways to explore. Leave time to compare different Sapporo beers in the tasting area.

The museum occupies a red-brick building that began as a sugar factory. Sapporo Beer acquired the building in 1903 and converted it into a malt house, which operated as a factory until 1965. The site became a beer memorial hall before the Sapporo Beer Museum opened in 1987.

Sapporo beer’s history dates to 1876, when brewing began in Hokkaido. The museum places that story in the context of the region’s development, including the relationship between local agriculture and beer production. Hokkaido’s land and climate supported barley farming, while brewing became part of Sapporo’s industrial history.

The exhibits follow changes in beer-making, from early methods to modern production. Vintage bottles, photographs, historical brewing equipment and advertising posters show how the brand and its presentation changed over time. Displays also introduce the broader history of beer in Japan and the development of the Sapporo brewery.

English explanations are available, so you can explore without joining a guided tour. The self-guided visit is free. If you want more context, the paid premium tour includes a guide and a 6K theater presentation. The tour lasts about 50 minutes; reserve ahead, particularly if you plan to visit on a weekend.

Beer tastings and the wider complex

After the exhibits, head to the tasting area to compare Sapporo beers. Options mentioned include Black Label, Sapporo Classic, which is available only in Hokkaido, and Kaitakushi Pilsner, a recreation of an early recipe. Tastings cost extra. The premium tour also includes samples of Black Label and Fukkoku Sapporo-sei Bakushu, a beer made to revive an original flavour.

The museum is part of Sapporo Garden Park, where the neighbouring Beer Garden has restaurants serving jingisukan, a grilled lamb dish, alongside beer. This makes it easy to pair a museum visit with a meal, though the restaurant is a separate stop. The museum has wheelchair-accessible entrances, elevators, seating and restrooms; ask staff for help reaching areas that require an alternative route.
