Santa Maria della Scala

Santa Maria della Scala is a museum complex opposite Siena Cathedral in Piazza del Duomo.

Santa Maria della Scala is a museum complex opposite Siena Cathedral in Piazza del Duomo. Its buildings once served as a hospital and shelter for pilgrims travelling the Via Francigena, as well as for the poor and abandoned children. Today, galleries and archaeological displays trace Siena’s history through art and objects from ancient times to the modern era. Look for the frescoes in the Pilgrims’ Hall, the underground archaeological spaces and the original Fonte Gaia sculptures. The complex spans several levels, so allow time to explore its varied rooms.

Santa Maria della Scala stands across Piazza del Duomo from Siena Cathedral. Its history is tied to the Via Francigena, the route used by pilgrims travelling towards Rome. The complex provided care and shelter for pilgrims, the poor and abandoned children, and grew into one of Europe’s major medieval hospitals.

The hospital’s role lasted for centuries. Its records offer evidence of the relationship between the pilgrimage route and Siena’s growth. The building later became a museum complex, bringing the site’s history together with collections of art and archaeology.

The Sala del Pellegrinaio, or Pilgrims’ Hall, is one of the most significant rooms to seek out. Its 15th-century frescoes show the hospital’s work and the care provided within its walls. Artists who worked on the cycle include Domenico di Bartolo, Lorenzo di Pietro, also known as Vecchietta, and Priamo della Quercia.

Domenico di Bartolo’s scenes include the care of sick people and other activities associated with the hospital. The subjects give the hall a close connection to the building’s original purpose, alongside the religious art and other works found elsewhere in the complex.

Collections across several levels

The museum occupies a large, layered complex that descends from Piazza del Duomo towards the valley behind it. Its changing levels include grand halls, narrow corridors and underground spaces cut into tuff. Archaeological displays include Etruscan and Roman material, while other collections span medieval, Renaissance and more recent art.

The complex also houses the original sculptures from the Fonte Gaia in Piazza del Campo. The fountain in the square is a replica; the original works by Jacopo della Quercia are preserved here. Different sections and exhibitions may have separate ticket arrangements, so check what your admission covers before setting out to see a particular collection.
