Fortezza Medicea

Fortezza Medicea is a historic fortress and public park in Siena, just outside the old town. Its broad walls frame views across the city, and the grounds give you room to walk, jog or pause among the greenery. The fortress was commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici as part of the Medici effort to secure control of Siena. Today, the free public space also has exercise equipment and a play area for children. Come for the city views, or use it as a quieter stop during a day of sightseeing.

Fortezza Medicea, also known as Forte di Santa Barbara, was commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici to strengthen the family’s control over Siena. Its thick stone walls and solid form reflect its military purpose, with the structure also carrying the architectural character of a Renaissance fortress.

The fortress stands just outside Siena’s old town. Its position gives you open views over the city, making the walls a natural place to pause and look across the rooftops.

A public park inside the walls

The fortress later became a public park, and it now serves as a recreational space for both local residents and visitors. People come to walk and jog, while exercise equipment and a children’s play area add practical uses to the historic grounds.

The green space provides a calmer alternative to the busier parts of the city. You can take a short walk, sit with a view of Siena or include the fortress as an outdoor stop on a sightseeing day. There is no entry fee.
