Antico Stabilimento Balneare di Mondello is a historic seaside pavilion on the promenade at Mondello, near Palermo. Built in 1913, its Art Nouveau design and position on stilts over the bay make it a striking landmark to see on a beach walk. The building now houses Alle Terrazze, a restaurant and bar. Come for the architecture and sea views, then continue along the promenade past the area’s Art Nouveau villas.

A bathing pavilion above the bay

Antico Stabilimento Balneare means “Old Bathing House.” The pavilion dates to 1913 and was built as a luxury seaside bathhouse. Its position over the water, reached from the promenade by a pier-like walkway, gives it a distinctive outline along Mondello’s shore.

The building is associated with the Art Nouveau style, known locally as Liberty. Its grand entrance and apricot-coloured façade stand out against the sea. The pavilion is a reminder of Mondello’s Belle Époque resort past, when seaside bathing was part of the area’s appeal.

The pavilion and the promenade today

The historic building now houses Alle Terrazze, a restaurant and bar. You can include it in a walk along the bay, with the pavilion and its views as the main reason to pause. The promenade continues past elegant Art Nouveau villas, adding more period architecture to the route.

Mondello is Palermo’s main seaside destination, positioned between the city and Capo Gallo Nature Reserve. For a different beach experience, the bay has both public sections and nearby private beach areas. The pavilion is especially atmospheric at sunset or after dark, when its reflection appears on the water.
