Tharros is an archaeological site on the Sinis Peninsula, near San Giovanni di Sinis on Sardinia’s western coast. Founded by the Phoenicians around the 8th century BC, the city later came under Punic and Roman rule; Bronze Age settlement is also indicated by Nuragic remains. Walk among basalt streets, houses, baths and other remnants on a narrow stretch of land between the sea and the Gulf of Oristano. The coastal setting is especially striking at sunset. A guided tour or audio guide can help explain the layers of history.
A Phoenician city on the Sinis Peninsula

Tharros occupies a narrow spit of land between the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Oristano, near Capo San Marco and the hill of San Giovanni. Its position by the sea shaped its role as a port and trading centre. The Phoenicians founded the city around the 8th century BC; it later became important to the Carthaginians and Romans.
The area’s history reaches further back. Nuragic remains point to Bronze Age settlement before the Phoenician city was established. Later communities added their own buildings and uses, leaving traces from several periods across the site. Tharros was inhabited into the medieval era, and its decline is associated with raids that prompted people to leave the city.
Streets, baths and coastal remains

Many of the visible Roman remains date to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. These include basalt-paved streets, baths and an aqueduct, alongside houses and temple remains. The ruins spread across a large archaeological area, so the visit involves walking over rising and falling ground rather than seeing everything from one viewpoint.
The surviving structures help make the different phases of the settlement legible as you move through it. Phoenician and Punic history sits alongside later Roman construction, while the broader landscape connects the archaeological area with the sea and nearby ponds. A Spanish tower also stands on a hill overlooking the peninsula.
