In Castelsardo’s historic centre, the Concattedrale di Sant’Antonio Abate stands above the sea, with a tall, tiled bell tower set apart from the church. Inside, a single nave opens onto side chapels with decorated wooden altars, wall frescoes and religious art. Look for the eighteenth-century pipe organ and the painting of the Virgin and Child above the main altar. The underground crypt adds another layer to a visit, with historic objects and religious works. Reaching the cathedral means walking uphill through narrow lanes or climbing steps.

The cathedral sits in Castelsardo’s historic centre, overlooking the water. Its position is part of the visit: the church occupies a panoramic spot, while its tall bell tower stands apart from the main building and is easy to pick out against the town’s profile.

The building brings together Catalan Gothic and Renaissance classicism. The reconstruction began in 1597 and continued into the eighteenth century. Its exterior is marked by the high tower, whose dome is covered in coloured tiles. The setting among the old town’s steep lanes gives the approach a different character from arriving at a church on a level street.

The nave, chapels and artworks

Inside, the church has a single nave and a series of side chapels. Their dedications include the Virgin of Mount Carmel, Saint Philip Neri, Saint Isidore the Farmer, Saint Vincent Ferrer and Saint Francis Xavier. Other chapels are dedicated to Saint Paschal Baylon, Our Lady of Pompeii and the Blessed Virgin of Good Journey. Several names and decorations reflect Spanish influence.

Look closely at the altars and the older wall paintings, including two frescoes that remain visible in one chapel. The church also contains statues, paintings and religious relics. Above the main altar is a painting of the Virgin and Child attributed to the Master of Castelsardo. At the opposite end of the nave, an eighteenth-century pipe organ sits in the choir loft.

The crypt and a guided visit

The underground crypt is a separate part of the cathedral visit, with historical objects and religious works from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Items noted there include a wooden statue of the Dormition of the Virgin, a reliquary containing tiny bone fragments, paintings, statues, vestments and an old book displayed on a lectern. Recent excavations and studies have also been carried out at the site to learn more about the history of the town.

A guided visit can help make sense of the chapels, the collection and the building’s history. The climb through Castelsardo’s narrow lanes and stairways takes some effort, so allow for the uphill approach as well as time inside the church and crypt.
