Chiesa di Sant'Efisio is a small Catholic church on Via Sant'Efisio in Cagliari’s Stampace district, dedicated to Efisio, Sardinia’s patron saint. It is the starting point of the Sant'Efisio procession on May 1, a tradition recorded since 1647, and the place where the saint’s statue returns after four days in Nora. Inside, look for the statue of Efisio by Giuseppe Lonis and the church’s carefully arranged lighting. During the feast, red flowers and drapes decorate the interior.

Chiesa di Sant'Efisio stands on Via Sant'Efisio in Stampace and is dedicated to Efisio, a soldier of the Roman Empire who became Christian and refused to renounce his faith. He was condemned to death by decapitation. Sardinians honour him as the island’s patron saint.

The church has a central place in Cagliari’s Sant'Efisio procession. The parade has set out from here each May 1 since 1647. After the statue of the saint spends four days in Nora, about 50 km from Cagliari, it is brought back to the church.

What to look for inside

Chiesa di Sant'Efisio

The church holds an ancient statue of Efisio by Giuseppe Lonis. Its interior is carefully maintained, and the lighting draws attention to the altar: the lamps around the church give off warm light, while those above the tabernacle are cooler in tone.

During the Sant'Efisio feast, red flowers and drapes decorate the interior. The church’s appearance is especially tied to this celebration, so check whether local festivities are planned around May 1 if you hope to see it dressed for the occasion.

Planning a visit

The church can be closed outside its visiting periods, so check access before setting out. It is listed as open on Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm, and Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm; it is listed as closed Monday through Thursday. Opening arrangements can also be affected by events.

Cover your shoulders and thighs as a mark of respect. Open Monument Day has included guided tours of the church, led by local guides.
