Three tall Corinthian columns mark the Temple of Castor and Pollux in Rome’s Roman Forum, near the Basilica Giulia. Dedicated to the twin gods known as the Dioscuri, the temple was first dedicated in 484 BC and rebuilt several times; its grand marble form dates to the reign of Tiberius. The columns and a fragment of the entablature are what remain above ground. Look closely at the surviving stonework, then continue to the nearby Forum ruins to see how the temple sat among ancient Rome’s civic buildings.

A temple to the Dioscuri

The Temple of Castor and Pollux, also called the Temple of the Dioscuri, was dedicated to the mythical twin gods. It was first dedicated in 484 BC and rebuilt more than once. Its grand marble form dates to the reign of Tiberius.

Tradition links the temple’s foundation to the Battle of Lake Regillus. According to the story, Castor and Pollux appeared after the Roman victory and watered their horses at the nearby Spring of Juturna. The temple commemorated the twins’ connection with the battle.

The surviving columns

Three Corinthian columns and a fragment of the entablature remain standing. They mark a corner of the Roman Forum near the Basilica Giulia. The columns are a prominent part of the ruins, and their height makes them visible among the surrounding ancient structures.

The original temple was much larger. Its front had eight Corinthian columns, with eleven along each side. The surviving corner gives a sense of its scale, but most of the building is gone.

A place in Forum life

The temple’s role extended beyond worship. Its podium front served as one of the Forum’s rostra, where public figures spoke and argued major laws. The podium also held standard weights and measures, while bankers rented rooms inside it.

A court was established in front of the temple from 160 BC. The site therefore connected religious tradition with the legal, political and commercial activity of the Forum.

Planning your visit

The temple stands within the Roman Forum, close to the Basilica Giulia. An early-morning or late-afternoon visit can help you avoid the busiest periods. Allow time to examine the surviving columns before moving on to other Forum remains.

Advance tickets are recommended for the site. The Colosseum website is listed for visitor information and ticket planning.
