Beside the Basilica of St John Lateran, the Pontificio Santuario della Scala Santa draws pilgrims to a staircase traditionally identified with the steps Jesus climbed before Pontius Pilate.

Beside the Basilica of St John Lateran, the Pontificio Santuario della Scala Santa draws pilgrims to a staircase traditionally identified with the steps Jesus climbed before Pontius Pilate. The 28 marble steps can be climbed on your knees or by using the regular side stairs. At the top, the Sancta Sanctorum chapel has frescoes, marble decoration and Cosmatesque mosaic floors. The complex also preserves Christian relics and early religious art, giving you reason to look beyond the staircase itself.

The 28 Holy Stairs

The Scala Santa is a marble staircase traditionally believed to have come from Pontius Pilate’s palace in Jerusalem. Christian tradition holds that Jesus climbed these steps on the way to his trial. St Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, is said to have brought them to Rome in the fourth century.

Pilgrims climb the 28 steps on their knees. If you prefer not to do so, a staircase beside them leads to the upper level.

The Sancta Sanctorum

At the top is the Sancta Sanctorum, a small chapel that once served as a papal chapel. Its interior has marble decoration, detailed frescoes and Cosmatesque mosaic floors. The complex also contains relics, including a piece associated with the Last Supper, and an early image of Jesus.

The sanctuary stands beside the Basilica of St John Lateran. Climbing the Scala Santa is free, while some areas inside require a ticket.
