Piazza di Siena

Piazza di Siena is an open-air arena in Villa Borghese, Rome, with a broad lawn, planted edges and umbrella pines. Prince Marcantonio IV Borghese had it created in 1792 as a space inspired by Siena’s Piazza del Campo. Its equestrian tradition continues with an international show jumping competition first held here in 1922, including Rome’s major event in May. Come for the historic setting, a walk among the park’s flowers or a quiet break on the grass. The nearby pond has boat rides.

An arena inspired by Siena

Piazza di Siena was created in 1792 at the wish of Prince Marcantonio IV Borghese. Its name comes from Siena, the Borghese family’s birthplace. The prince wanted the space to recall Piazza del Campo, the city square associated with the Palio horse race.

That idea shaped the piazza as a place for races and public spectacle. Its open centre still gives it the character of an arena, while the trees and planted borders connect it to the wider grounds of Villa Borghese. It is a distinctive change of scale from the park’s quieter paths: broad and open in the middle, greener at the edges.

A continuing equestrian tradition

The first international show jumping competition at Piazza di Siena took place in 1922. The arena remains associated with equestrian sport, and Rome’s major competition is held here in May. The event brings a sporting use to a space originally designed for horse races and outdoor gatherings.

If the competition is your main reason to come, check its arrangements before setting out. Advance tickets are recommended for events. The grounds are also used for other activities and events, though the details depend on what is scheduled.

A pause in Villa Borghese

Away from event days, the open lawn is used for exercise, games and relaxed time outdoors. You can stroll around the grounds or sit among the flowers and trees. The setting is also suited to a short break from exploring the park, with an open central area and shaded edges.

A pond nearby has boat rides, which add another way to spend time in Villa Borghese. Piazza di Siena is one of several places to visit in the park; other nearby points of interest include the Ionic temple and the Pincio terrace, known for its panoramic city view. Summer can be warm and humid, while the grounds remain pleasant to explore in autumn.
