Galleria Lorcan O'Neill Roma

Galleria Lorcan O’Neill Roma is a contemporary art gallery in Rome’s historic centre, near Campo de’ Fiori.

Galleria Lorcan O’Neill Roma is a contemporary art gallery in Rome’s historic centre, near Campo de’ Fiori. It occupies converted 17th-century stables at Palazzo Santacroce, with a bright main gallery for exhibitions by established and emerging artists. Past shows have included work by Tracey Emin, Richard Long, Sam Taylor-Johnson and Anselm Kiefer. Entry is free, and the calm, open rooms offer a quieter change of pace from the streets outside. The entrance is tucked off an alley, so look carefully as you approach the address.

Galleria Lorcan O’Neill began as an art space in Trastevere in 2003. In 2014, it moved to Rome’s historic centre, taking over converted 17th-century stables at Palazzo Santacroce, near Campo de’ Fiori.

The gallery brings established international artists and newer names together in its exhibition programme. Artists whose work has appeared here include Turner Prize winners Tracey Emin and Richard Long, alongside British visual artist Eddie Peake and Italian painter Gianni Politi. Past exhibitions have also included work by Sam Taylor-Johnson and Anselm Kiefer.

The gallery holds around five to six exhibitions a year. The programme ranges across paintings, sculpture, installations and conceptual art, so the work on view changes from one visit to another. Check the gallery’s website for details of the current show before planning your stop.

The main gallery is a bright, open space, with pale interiors that leave room to focus on the art. The setting feels removed from the busy streets nearby, despite being in the historic centre. Entry is free. For a closer explanation of the work, a guided tour can add context; tours have been led by Camilla.

Finding the entrance

The gallery’s listed address is Vicolo de’ Catinari 3, but the entrance is not easy to spot from the street. Turn right into the alley before you reach the address and look for the way in there. Allow a moment to orient yourself rather than expecting a prominent entrance directly on the road.
