Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi

In the centre of Piazza Navona, the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi is Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s 17th-century fountain, built for Pope Innocent X. Four sculpted river gods gather around an ancient Egyptian obelisk, set above a rugged travertine base. Look closely for details such as the animals and the different attributes of each figure, then walk around the fountain to see how its forms and water change from each angle. Come early or late for a quieter look; the square and its surrounding architecture are part of the visit.

Bernini’s fountain in Piazza Navona

The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi stands at the centre of Piazza Navona. Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed it for Pope Innocent X, and it was completed in 1651. The pope wanted the square transformed into a monumental setting connected with his family, and the fountain was placed outside Palazzo Pamphilj, the family residence.

Its four river gods represent the Danube, Nile, Ganges and Río de la Plata, rivers associated in the 17th century with Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. Their powerful, twisting forms give the fountain a sense of movement. Take time to circle it: the figures, water and stone create different views from each side.

The four rivers and their details

Each river figure has its own identifying details. The Danube touches the Pamphilj family emblem, linking the river to Rome and the pope’s family. The Nile’s covered head refers to the fact that its source was unknown to Europeans at the time. The Ganges holds a long oar, an attribute associated with the river’s navigability. These details reward a slower look at the sculptures rather than a single photograph from across the piazza.

Animals are worked into the composition too. Look around the rocky base for carved creatures, including lions and horses. The contrast between the rugged stone and the marble figures helps distinguish the fountain’s different elements.

The obelisk and a Roman legend

An ancient Egyptian obelisk rises from the centre of the fountain. Bernini placed it above a hollow structure of travertine rock, creating the impression that the heavy monument is suspended over the water. The arrangement brings together the obelisk, the rough stone base and the sculpted figures in one dramatic composition.

A familiar story claims that the Río de la Plata figure raises a hand to shield itself from the nearby church of Sant’Agnese in Agone, supposedly because Bernini feared the work of his rival Francesco Borromini. The story does not fit the building sequence: the church’s façade was constructed after the fountain. You can see both landmarks from Piazza Navona, but the gesture is not evidence of a feud.
