Fondazione Pastificio Cerere

Fondazione Pastificio Cerere is a contemporary art space in San Lorenzo, inside a former pasta factory at Via degli Ausoni, 7. Its renovated galleries retain traces of the building’s industrial past, including preserved machinery, and the upper rooms are especially striking. Exhibitions bring new work into the old production spaces, while the underground areas give a glimpse of the factory’s former functions. Come for the art and stay attentive to the building itself, where industrial details sit alongside modern exhibition design.

A pasta factory becomes an art space

Pastificio Cerere began as a pasta factory in 1905. Named after Ceres, the Roman goddess of fertility, it produced pasta for more than 50 years and helped supply Rome during both World Wars. Production ended in the 1960s. About a decade later, the building reopened as a multifunctional space for artists.

The change of use is still legible in the renovated rooms. Industrial details and preserved machines remain alongside contemporary exhibition spaces, giving the building a character that comes from its former work as well as its current programme.

Art and studios in San Lorenzo

The foundation is part of San Lorenzo’s network of galleries and ateliers. The building became known for hosting the San Lorenzo Group, a collective formed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its members included Piero Pizzi Cannella, Giuseppe Gallo, Nunzio, Bruno Ceccobelli, Marco Tirelli and Gianni Dessì.

In 1984, Pastificio Cerere also helped establish the area’s ateliers exhibitions, when artists opened their private living and working spaces to the public. Check the foundation’s current programme before visiting, then allow time to explore the upper galleries and underground areas as well as the artwork on display.
