Beneath the Basilica of San Sebastiano on Via Appia Antica, the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian preserve underground burial passages, tombs, inscriptions and frescoes from early Christian Rome. A guided tour brings the site’s burial customs and the stories associated with Christians and martyrs into focus. The chambers were also linked with the remains of Saints Peter and Paul. The visit ends at the basilica and takes you into a quieter part of Rome’s history, away from the busy streets above.

Burial chambers beneath the basilica

The Catacombs of Saint Sebastian extend beneath the Basilica of San Sebastiano on the Appian Way. The underground chambers hold tombs, burial niches, inscriptions and frescoes connected with early Christian burial practices. The site also contains Ancient Roman tombs.

Development of the catacombs began in the first century. The passages were heavily developed over time, and the site became associated with the remains of Saints Peter and Paul. The remains of Saint Sebastian were interred here in 350 AD, after which a basilica was built in his honour in the early fourth century.

The name and the underground route

These burial chambers were the first to be called catacombs. The name comes from Greek words meaning “near” and “cavity,” referring to their location beside a cave.

A guided tour takes you through the underground passages and explains the burial customs and history of the site. Tours last about 40 to 45 minutes and involve a moderate amount of stair climbing. The route is dimly lit, and the passages can feel enclosed, though they are not especially tight. The tour ends at the basilica.

Planning a respectful visit

Arrive in time for your booked tour. If you reach the site early, staff may be able to fit you into an earlier slot, but that is not guaranteed. Stay with the guide throughout the visit, as the passages form a labyrinth.

Photography is permitted only at the entrance, not inside the tunnels. This protects the quiet character of the burial place. Temperatures underground are around 50 to 60°F, which can feel cool after the heat outside.
