Basilica of Saint Lawrence in Lucina

The Basilica of Saint Lawrence in Lucina stands just off Via del Corso in Rome’s Centro Storico.

The Basilica of Saint Lawrence in Lucina stands just off Via del Corso in Rome’s Centro Storico. Founded in the 4th century, it brings together medieval features and a richly decorated Baroque interior by Cosimo Fanzago. Look for the coffered ceiling, marbled walls and chapels, then see Guido Reni’s Crucifixion above the high altar and Bernini’s sculpted bust of Gabriele Fonseca. A fragment of the gridiron associated with Saint Lawrence is kept in the crypt. Entry is free, and the church is a quiet pause between nearby sights.

From early church to Baroque interior

The basilica’s origins are traced to the 4th century, when a church was founded on the site of the house of the Roman matron Lucina. It was consecrated in 440 by Pope Sixtus III and rebuilt in the 12th century under Pope Paschal II.

The exterior has a simple façade and a portico supported by six Ionic granite columns. Its Romanesque bell tower points to the church’s medieval history. Inside, much of the decoration reflects a 17th-century redesign by Cosimo Fanzago, with later Baroque changes in the 19th century.

Art and details inside

The basilica has a single nave with side aisles and chapels. Its patterned coffered ceiling and marble surfaces set the tone; sculptures and frescoes add detail throughout. Above the high altar hangs Guido Reni’s painting of the Crucifixion, framed by black marble Corinthian columns.

In the Fonseca Chapel, the sculpted bust of Gabriele Fonseca, a physician to Pope Innocent X, is by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Fonseca is shown in prayer, with a notably lifelike expression.

The crypt and memorials

Fragments of an iron gridiron associated with Saint Lawrence’s martyrdom are kept in the crypt beneath the main altar. The relic is linked to the tradition that the saint was martyred on a heated gridiron.

The basilica is also a burial place for notable figures. Nicolas Poussin is buried here, and his tombstone has a relief based on his painting The Arcadian Shepherds. Composer Bernardo Pasquini is also buried in the church.
