Em resumo

Pisa is an easy day trip from Florence: regional trains take about an hour, and the Piazza dei Miracoli is a 25 to 30 minute walk or a short bus ride from the station. Book your Leaning Tower slot first and build the day around it. A half day is enough for the piazza, and a full day lets you add the old town or Lucca. A rail pass is not needed.

Is Pisa a good day trip from Florence?

Yes. Pisa is about an hour from Florence by regional train, the Piazza dei Miracoli is walkable from the station, and the main sights fit in a half day. The Pisa travel guide covers the city. If you are linking Tuscan cities, Pisa also sits on a wider Italy route, with Florence on one side and Lucca on the other.

The one thing that shapes the day is the Tower slot. Tower tickets are timed, and late visitors are refused, so book first, then choose a train that gets you to the piazza with time to spare. The rules and the cloakroom are covered in the Leaning Tower ticket guide.

The train from Florence

Take a regional train from Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Pisa Centrale. The ride takes about an hour, and trains run through the day, so you can choose a morning departure that suits your slot. Regional tickets are inexpensive, and you can buy them at the station or in an app. A paper ticket must be validated in the station machine before you board; Trenitalia's regional page says the validation counts until 23:59 on the printed day and the trip must finish within 4 hours.

You do not need a rail pass for this trip. A regional ticket is cheaper than any pass, and a pass only makes sense if you are stringing together many long trips. For help, read Is a Eurail pass worth it?. For slower routes that avoid peak weeks, see Italy by train off-peak.

From Florence you want Pisa Centrale, the main station. Check the timetable for your service, since the journey time varies between roughly 50 and 70 minutes depending on the train type.

From the station to the Piazza dei Miracoli

From Pisa Centrale, the Piazza dei Miracoli is about 25 to 30 minutes on foot. The walk crosses the Arno and goes through the old town, past the arcaded Borgo Stretto and the Piazza dei Cavalieri, so many visitors treat it as part of the visit. If you are short on time or the day is hot, take a city bus or a taxi.

Plan to arrive at the piazza at least 20 to 30 minutes before your Tower slot. You need time for the cloakroom, because bags are not allowed on the climb, and late arrivals are refused. If you arrive early, walk the grass and look at the cathedral and baptistery while you wait. Keep the walk simple on a hot day, and carry water.

If you are flying into Pisa airport instead, the PisaMover people mover links the airport and Pisa Centrale in a few minutes. Trenitalia's airport page says it runs daily from 06:00 to midnight, with departures every 5 to 15 minutes, from platform 14 at the station, and lists the fare at €6.50 on top of the train ticket.

A day plan for Pisa

Here is a plan for a full day that works from Florence. Adjust the order to your Tower slot.

Take an early train so you arrive in the morning. Walk from the station through the old town and reach the piazza before your slot. Do the Tower, then the cathedral and baptistery, and leave the museums for the afternoon if you have time. Take lunch in the old town, away from the immediate piazza, where menus are less touristy.

After lunch, walk along the Arno. Santa Maria della Spina, a small Gothic church on the river, is a short walk from the central bridge, and the riverfront has good views. If you like, step into the Piazza dei Cavalieri and look at the facade of the university building. Then return to the station and take an afternoon train back to Florence.

Keep the plan loose. Pisa suits a slow day, and the piazza is the main reason to come. If the heat is high, shorten the walk and take a bus.

Add Lucca without rushing

Lucca is about 30 minutes from Pisa by regional train, and it suits a second stop in the same day. Its Renaissance walls are intact, and you can walk or cycle along the top. Spend the late afternoon there, then take a train back to Florence, which takes about one hour 20 minutes to one and a half hours on most services.

It is a long day, so start early and keep the Pisa part tight. If you would rather not rush, choose one or the other, or stay a night in Lucca. For help choosing, read Pisa or Lucca. Pisa can also be combined with Cinque Terre on a different day, but that is a longer trip that is better with an overnight.

What to eat, and where

Lunch is a good reason to leave the piazza. The streets around the Borgo Stretto and the Piazza delle Vettovaglie, an old market square, have small trattorias and bakeries that serve locals as well as visitors. Look for menus with a short list of dishes and a daily special, and avoid places with photographs of every plate.

Tuscan staples suit the stop: a plate of cured meats, a bean or bread soup in cool weather, or a simple pasta. Pisa also has a tradition of savory chickpea flatbread, called cecina, which is sold by the slice in some bakeries. Ask for a table away from the piazza if you want a quieter meal, and check opening hours, since many kitchens close between lunch and dinner.

Tour or train?

The train is the default, and it is cheap and simple. You control your pace, and you can skip the climb if you prefer. The downside is that you handle the Tower slot, the walk and the return yourself.

A guided day trip from Florence bundles transport and a guide. It suits visitors who dislike planning or want context, and some tours combine Pisa with Lucca or Siena. Compare what the price includes, such as Tower entry, group size and time at each stop. Skip a tour that does not say which entry it includes.

If you are unsure, take the train and add a short guided walk in Pisa, or buy the Tower slot yourself and use the rest of the day for free exploration.

If you only have four hours

A short version is possible. Take a morning train, walk straight to the piazza, do the Tower, step into the cathedral and take a quick walk back through the old town to the station. You will miss the river and a relaxed lunch, but you will see what most people come for.

In this version, skip the museums and the Camposanto. Buy food on the way back, take a bus if you are short on time, and keep a buffer for the train. Check the last convenient train before you commit, so that a late finish does not ruin the evening in Florence.

Heat, rain and common mistakes

In July and August, the piazza has almost no shade, and the walk from the station is exposed. Go early, carry water and take a bus if you feel the heat. On a rainy day, plan the indoor sights, the cathedral, the baptistery and the museums, and leave the Tower for a dry slot if you have a choice.

A few mistakes are common. Visitors forget that the Tower slot is timed and arrive late. They bring large bags and then need time for the cloakroom. They spend too long on the souvenir stalls near the piazza and not enough in the old town. And they try to add Siena or Cinque Terre on the same day, which is not realistic by train. Keep the plan simple, and add Lucca only if you start early.

Before you go

Book the Tower slot, pick a train that fits it, and check the return times. Take water, a small bag and flat shoes. Check the timetable on your phone before you leave, and keep your tickets in an app or on screen.

When to book the Tower slot against the train

Book the Tower first, then pick a train that reaches Pisa Centrale well before it. The official rules say the time of the Tower visit, but not the date, can be changed up to 2 hours before entry, so a slightly wrong guess can be fixed if your train changes. The ticket is for a specific day, late visitors are refused, and visitors should arrive 15 minutes before the printed time to leave bags. Work backward from the slot: cloakroom 15 minutes, walk or bus from the station 25 to 30 minutes, then a margin for a delayed train.

For a morning slot, that points to an early Florence train. For an afternoon slot, take a late-morning train, eat lunch in the old town, and walk to the piazza with an hour in hand. Opening hours also change with the season, and the official calendar for autumn and winter shows earlier closing times in November, so a late-afternoon slot in winter leaves little daylight.

What to skip in Pisa

Skip the souvenir stalls on the approach to the piazza, which are aimed squarely at tour groups. Skip queuing for the Cathedral on its own: the official site says any ticket comes with a free untimed pass, so you do not need a separate line. Skip trying to see every monument on a short day: choose the Tower, the Cathedral and the Baptistery, and leave the Camposanto and the museums for a longer visit. If you are short on time, skip the walk across the old town in the heat and take a city bus from the station.

Who should not do Pisa as a day trip

If you are staying in Florence for only one or two nights and your list is already full of museums, Pisa will cost you most of a day for a landmark you can see in a morning. Skip it if you dislike crowds in summer, if the Tower slot you want is sold out and you cannot move your day, or if you have mobility problems and want to climb: the Tower has 251 steps and no lift. In those cases, replace Pisa with Lucca or Siena, where the pace is gentler.
