Em resumo

Leaning Tower tickets are for a fixed time, and late arrivals are not admitted or refunded. The official rules page says online booking opens 90 days before the visit, bags go to a cloakroom, children must be 8 by the end of the year and the climb is 251 steps, about 30 minutes. Book the Tower first, then plan the rest of the piazza around the slot.

How Leaning Tower booking works

The Leaning Tower stands on the Piazza dei Miracoli beside the cathedral and baptistery, and it is the one sight in the city where you must plan your time. The Pisa travel guide shows how the Tower fits into a visit, and this page settles the ticket question. Pisa is also an easy stop on a wider Italy route, between Florence, Lucca and the Ligurian coast.

Tower tickets are sold for a fixed time slot. The official ticket advice page says the ticket is valid only on the day and at the time shown, and that a visitor who is late will not be allowed in and will not be refunded. The Tower rules page says online booking opens 90 days before the visit and runs until the day of the visit, and online tickets are limited in number. Reduced-price Tower tickets are not offered, and admission is free only for disabled visitors with their helper, on presentation of the proper certification.

Buy on the official site, Opera della Primaziale Pisana, which explains the rules in detail. Payment there is by Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card only. The site does not publish the Tower price in text on its ticket advice page, so read the price table on the official ticket page for your date before you pay.

Slots in spring, early autumn and school holidays fill first. If your dates are fixed, book the Tower as soon as the window opens, and plan the rest of the day around it. If you are flexible, midweek and early or late slots are easier to get, and the piazza is quieter at the edges of the day.

Age limits and bag rules

The Tower has strict rules, and they are enforced at the door. Children who have not turned 8 by the end of the year are not allowed in. Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, so a teenager cannot go up alone, and the site says ID may be requested to certify age. If you are traveling with a family, check the age of each child against the rule for your travel year before you book.

Bags are not allowed on the climb. Hand bags, backpacks and luggage must be left at the cloakroom before the visit and collected afterward. The official page gives 20 x 30 x 38 cm as the maximum size for small bags, with no weight limit, and it tells visitors to arrive 15 minutes before the time printed on the ticket. Build that time into your slot, because the rule that late visitors are refused applies even if you were in the queue.

If you arrive by train with luggage, plan where to leave it. Some stations offer storage, and many hotels will hold bags for a few hours. Check options before you travel.

What the climb is like

The official page says the visit takes about 30 minutes and involves 251 steps. The floor is uneven and can be slippery, and the steps wind up the inside of the tilted tower. Think honestly about fitness and balance before you book, since there is no lift and no quick way down.

The tilt is noticeable inside, and some visitors find it disorienting. At the top there is a view over the piazza and the city, and you share the balcony with a small group.

If the climb is not for you, the Tower looks just as striking from the ground, and the rest of the piazza is flat and easy. Skip the climb with small children or if you dislike narrow stairs, and spend the time in the cathedral and baptistery instead.

What else is on the piazza

The Tower is only one of several monuments. The Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Camposanto cemetery, the Sinopie Museum and the Cathedral Museum are on or beside the same square. The official pages say Tower tickets are sold separately with time-specific reservations, while the Baptistery, Camposanto and the museums use a ticket that is valid for one year from the chosen date, not before it. The Cathedral is free to enter. Any ticket you buy comes with a free pass for it that is not timed, and the timed cathedral-only passes are limited and handed out only at the ticket offices on site, not online.

For most visitors, the Tower plus the cathedral and baptistery fills a half day. The Baptistery's acoustics are a highlight, and the Cathedral has a rich interior. If you have a full day, add the Camposanto and one museum, then walk into the old town for lunch and a stroll by the river. You can see the full plan in the Pisa day trip from Florence guide.

Pisa is also close to Lucca, which suits a second stop in the same day. If you are not sure whether to give the time to Pisa or Lucca, read Pisa or Lucca.

Official ticket, reseller or guided visit

The official site is the simplest way to book the Tower, and it avoids extra fees and confusion about what is included. Resellers and tour operators also sell entry, often as part of a guided visit. A guide adds context on the piazza, the architecture and the history of the tilt, which a ticket alone does not.

Choose a guided visit if you want explanation or hate planning. Choose the official ticket if you want to go at your own pace. If you buy through a third party, check which entry is included, whether the Tower slot is guaranteed, the meeting point and the cancellation terms. Skip any offer that does not say clearly what it covers.

For changes, the official pages say the time of the Tower visit, but not the date, can be changed up to 2 hours before entry. Orders that include a Tower ticket can be cancelled up to 2 hours before the chosen time, orders without one until midnight on the day, and the refund goes back to the original payment method in full. An order that contains a used or cancelled ticket cannot be modified, and rules are strict for late arrivals.

Choosing a slot, and what to do if it is sold out

Pick a time that fits your travel, not just the one that is available first. If you arrive by train, leave a margin of at least an hour after the train time, since walking from the station takes 25 to 30 minutes and the cloakroom adds time. If you drive or take the airport shuttle, allow for parking and the walk from the car park.

Early slots are cooler in summer and quieter on the piazza. Later slots give softer light for photographs, but you may be tired by then. In winter, daylight is shorter, so check the time of sunset against your slot if you want the view from the top.

If the slot you want is sold out, try nearby dates first, and then check again closer to the day. Because the Tower time can be changed up to 2 hours before entry and orders can be cancelled up to then, slots free up as other visitors change plans. Do not buy from a seller who promises a guaranteed slot when the official site shows none, and check what a reseller's offer includes before you pay.

Accessibility and families

The Tower climb is steep and uneven, with 251 steps and no lift. If you are traveling with someone who cannot climb, they can still see the Tower from the ground and visit the cathedral, baptistery and museums, which are easier. The Tower is free only for disabled visitors with a helper, with proper certification. Check the official site for access details, since conditions can change.

Families should check the age rule before booking, because children who have not turned 8 by the end of the year cannot enter, and teens need an adult. Prams and strollers are not suited to the Tower, and bags go to the cloakroom, so plan who will carry what. A short, well-timed visit is better than a rushed one.

Before you go

Book the Tower slot, and then plan your trip to Pisa around it. Arrive at the piazza 20 to 30 minutes early, leave your bag at the cloakroom and keep your ticket on your phone. Wear flat shoes with grip for the stairs.

If you fly into Pisa from outside Europe, you will go through the Entry/Exit System at the border, which replaced passport stamps in April 2026, so allow extra time. See EES, explained. For the rest of the trip, compare travel insurance, set up an eSIM and see how to get around Europe by train.

When the monuments are open

Hours change with the season, and the official calendar is published a few months at a time. The calendar for this year showed extended summer hours between 17 June and 31 August, with the monuments and museums open until 22:30 and a special evening opening for the Tower. For October and November, the same calendar showed closing at 20:00 in early October, then 19:00 from mid-October to 1 November, and 18:00 from 2 November, with the Cathedral opening later in the morning than the other monuments. The Baptistery has shorter hours on Sundays because of religious services, and some of its areas can be closed for restoration.

For a slot in the evening, check the sunset against your time in winter and the cloakroom opening against your arrival in summer. The calendar page on the official site is the one to read the day before you go, since it is updated regularly. If you are visiting on a feast day or in the first days of November, check for closures and free-entry days in the calendar.

Mistakes to avoid

Booking the Tower slot first and the train second: choose a train that reaches the piazza at least 30 minutes early, not one that arrives on the hour. Arriving with a large bag and finding that the cloakroom limits its size. Assuming a child under eight can go up if the parent buys a ticket. Buying from a reseller that does not name the slot or the entry it covers. And planning a day that has no room for a delay, since a late arrival means no entry and no refund.

Perguntas frequentes

Do you need to book the Leaning Tower in advance?

Yes. Tower tickets are sold for a specific time slot, and the official rules page says online booking opens 90 days before the visit and runs until the day of the visit. Online tickets are limited in number, so busy months sell out. Book as soon as your dates are firm.

What happens if you are late for your Tower slot?

You will not be admitted, and the ticket is not refunded. The official page says the ticket is valid only on the day and at the time shown, so arrive early and allow for the cloakroom.

Can children climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa?

Children who will not have turned 8 by the end of the year are not allowed in. Visitors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and ID may be requested to certify age. Reduced-price Tower tickets are not offered; check the official FAQ for the rules on your date.

Can you bring a bag up the Leaning Tower?

No. Bags go to the cloakroom before the visit. The official page gives 20 x 30 x 38 cm as the maximum size for small bags, with no weight limit, and asks visitors to arrive 15 minutes before the printed time. Large suitcases are not allowed.

How long does the Leaning Tower visit take?

About 30 minutes for the climb itself, which has 251 steps on uneven and slippery stone. Add time for the cloakroom and the queue. Allow another hour or two for the Duomo, Baptistery and the square.

Do you need a ticket for the Pisa Cathedral?

The Cathedral is free to enter. Any ticket you buy comes with an untimed free pass, and cathedral-only timed passes are limited and available only at the ticket offices on site. The Baptistery, Camposanto and museums use a separate ticket valid for one year.
