Battistero di San Giovanni

The Battistero di San Giovanni is a round marble baptistery in Piazza dei Miracoli, opposite Pisa Cathedral.

The Battistero di San Giovanni is a round marble baptistery in Piazza dei Miracoli, opposite Pisa Cathedral. Its lower levels follow the Romanesque style, while pointed Gothic forms appear higher up, reflecting changes made during its long construction. Inside, look for Nicola Pisano’s sculpted pulpit and the octagonal baptismal font at the centre. The double-shell dome gives the space remarkable acoustics, sometimes demonstrated by staff. Climb to the upper level for a view of the cathedral and the square.

A building shaped over two centuries

Construction began in 1152, with the design attributed to Diotisalvi. The work continued through the following centuries and was completed in 1363. Nicola Pisano and his son Giovanni took part in the later stages, extending and reshaping the building.

The long building period is visible in its architecture. The lower part has Romanesque forms, while the upper levels introduce Gothic pointed arches. This shift gives the exterior a distinct change of style as the eye moves upward.

The dome, pulpit and baptismal font

The baptistery’s unusual roof is made of two domes, one within the other. The structure shapes the building’s acoustics: sound carries and reverberates through the interior, and staff sometimes demonstrate the effect. The round, open space keeps attention on the architecture and the objects at its centre.

Nicola Pisano’s marble pulpit is a major work inside. Its sculpted panels depict scenes from the life of Christ, and columns supported by lions lift the structure. Nearby, the large octagonal baptismal font stands at the centre of the building, above three steps. The pulpit and font offer two different ways to read the space: through its medieval sculpture and its role as a place for baptism.

A view over Piazza dei Miracoli

The upper level gives a different perspective on the baptistery’s setting, with a view towards the cathedral and its facade. From outside, the building’s circular plan and white marble make it easy to distinguish in Piazza dei Miracoli. Its position opposite the cathedral places it among the square’s principal religious monuments.
