The market in historic Jaffa

Jaffa Flea Market
Jaffa Flea Market

The market sits in the older part of Jaffa, where stone storefronts open onto the lanes. Furniture restorers, antique shops, vintage stores and small one-of-a-kind cafés line the streets, and the flea market and covered bazaars fill the spaces between them.

The market is one of the places that show Jaffa's long history and its mixed character. Visitors who are interested in the city's past will find it an easy place to start, because the stalls themselves are a record of older objects, household goods and everyday things.

What the stalls sell

The stalls carry antiques, vintage clothing, textiles, jewellery, bric-a-brac and handmade crafts. Hamsa charms are common, and locally made jewellery is a good choice for a souvenir. One visitor found a large hanukkiah, the lamp used at Hanukkah, which shows the range of objects on offer.

The vintage shops run from designer labels to handmade artisan pieces. Fridge magnets and other small souvenirs are easy to find, so you can buy something light if you want a keepsake without a large purchase.

Food and cafés

Street food is a strong part of the market. Shawarma is a good first choice, and the cafés and restaurants give you a place to sit down with a coffee or a meal.

Puaa is a restaurant and café in the heart of the flea market. It opened in 1999 and takes its name from its owner. Tadam is a newer bakery in the market, with pastel colours and a donut-shaped swing at the front. Hummus and seafood are worth ordering from the restaurants nearby.

How a visit works

Entry is free. Debit cards, credit cards and NFC mobile payments are accepted at the market, and the entrance, restroom and parking lot are wheelchair accessible.

Friday morning is the best time to come. The stalls open in the early hours, musicians play, and locals make up a large share of the crowd, which gives the market a relaxed, working feel. Plan to bargain over souvenirs and vintage items, and take time to look at the boutiques and cafés tucked among the stalls, not only the open-air tables.
