MoLI takes its name from Molly Bloom, a character in James Joyce’s Ulysses. The museum is in Newman House on St Stephen’s Green, a building associated with University College Dublin. Joyce studied at the university, and other writers connected with its history include Gerard Manley Hopkins, Mary Lavin, Kate O’Brien, Flann O’Brien and Maeve Binchy.

The museum opened in 2019. Its subject is Irish writing across more than a thousand years, from oral storytelling to contemporary literature. The displays are arranged around themes, rather than as a simple chronological sequence, and combine objects with audio-visual installations.

Joyce, Ulysses and the collection

James Joyce has a prominent place in the museum. One of its key objects is Copy No. 1 of the first edition of Ulysses, a copy that was given to Joyce. Displays also explore his life and writing, including a map of Dublin locations connected with his novels.

The collection extends beyond Joyce. First editions, portraits, diaries, letters and personal belongings give visitors a closer look at writers including W.B. Yeats, Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, Bram Stoker and Seamus Heaney. Exhibitions also include contemporary authors, so the museum’s account of Irish literature reaches beyond its most famous names.

The house, garden and a guided visit

The museum combines historic rooms with exhibition spaces. Its galleries use installations and sound and visual material to present literary subjects, with each display offering a different way into the work and lives of writers. A guided tour can add context to the exhibitions and to the history of the house; tours have covered both the writers and the building.

Outside, the garden provides a quieter place to pause. An ash tree there is associated with Joyce’s graduation photographs. The museum also has a café and a shop, where books and items made by local artists are available. Check the museum’s website for current tour and event details before setting out.
