Taman Pujaan Bangsa Margarana is a memorial park in Marga village, Tabanan, dedicated to those who died in Bali’s independence struggle. Its central 17-metre monument commemorates the 1946 Puputan Margarana battle, led by I Gusti Ngurah Rai. The park in Marga village commemorates the Balinese fighters who died in the independence struggle. Its central story is the Puputan Margarana battle of 1946, fought against Dutch forces. I Gusti Ngurah Rai led the Balinese soldiers; he was among those killed in the fighting.

The 17-metre monument was built in 1954. The memorial grounds also include statues and names engraved in stone. There are graves elsewhere in the complex, but accounts differ on whether the central monument itself is a burial place, so treat it as a memorial rather than assuming the monument contains remains.

The complex is laid out in several areas, including a lawn garden, ponds, the monument area and a garden shaded by trees. Paths connect these spaces, giving you room to explore at a quiet pace. The Bale Bengong, an open pavilion, is a place to sit and look across the grounds.

The park has a solemn role, while also being part of local daily life. Residents use the lawn and walking track for exercise, and some visit the cemetery to remember relatives. Keep your voice low and dress respectfully as you move through the grounds.

The museum and its collection

A museum inside the complex presents photographs of the fighters and objects connected with the wartime period. The collection has included Balinese swords and keris, small samurai swords, American and British artifacts, and communication and medical equipment. The museum is the place to look for more context on the battle and the people involved.

Museum access is not assured: visitors have encountered locked entrances and no staff on site. Check whether it is open before travelling specifically to see the exhibits. Even if the rooms are closed, you can still walk around the memorial grounds; food stalls are reported outside the complex.
