Pura Lempuyang Luhur is a sacred Hindu temple complex in eastern Bali’s Karangasem Regency, reached by a steep road and climb. Its famous split gateway frames Mount Agung, while higher levels bring views across the surrounding mountains and encounters with monkeys. The temple sits high on Mount Lempuyang, so getting there takes more effort than a quick photo stop. Wear a sarong for entry, and take the shuttle from the parking area up the narrow hillside road.

Pura Lempuyang Luhur is part of a seven-temple complex in eastern Bali. The main temple stands at about 1,175 metres above sea level on Mount Lempuyang, in Karangasem Regency. It is a place of worship for Hindus as well as a destination for visitors, so approach the grounds with respect.

The temple is regarded as one of Bali’s oldest and is often compared in importance with Besakih, the island’s mother temple. Its position above the eastern landscape gives the visit a different feel from a stop in Bali’s busier tourist centres.

The gateway and the climb

The split gateway known as the Gateway to Heaven is the best-known photo spot. It frames Mount Agung, Bali’s tallest peak. The mirrored reflection sometimes seen in photographs is created with a mirror; it is not a reflection in a pool at the temple. On a clear day, the views from the hillside include surrounding mountains.

Vehicles are left at the parking area below the steep, narrow road, and visitors continue uphill by shuttle. Sarongs are required for entry and can be borrowed near the ticket booth. Monkeys live around the higher temple levels, so take care as you move through the complex.
