Venetian Fort Kales

Venetian Fort Kales stands beside the old port entrance in Ierapetra, on Crete’s south coast.

Venetian Fort Kales stands beside the old port entrance in Ierapetra, on Crete’s south coast. Built by the Venetians in the 13th century, it was used to defend the port and later repaired under Ottoman rule. Walk along its thick stone walls for views over the sea and harbour. The fort is small, with no exhibits inside, so allow a brief stop rather than planning a long visit. Access has been affected by fortification work, so check before setting out.

Venetian Fort Kales stands at the entrance to Ierapetra’s old port. The Venetians built it in the 13th century to protect the port from pirate attacks. Its four corner bastions give the fort a form compared with Frangokastello in southwestern Crete.

The site dates to the Venetian period and was later repaired under Ottoman rule. It remains a local landmark and a visible reminder of Ierapetra’s history.

Inside the walls

The fort is compact, and its rooms are empty rather than arranged as museum galleries. The main reason to go inside is to walk along the restored stonework and look out over the port and sea.

Cultural events are held here, including the Kirvia Cultural Festival in summer. Check current access before visiting, since fortification work has temporarily closed the site or parts of it.
