Rimondi Fountain is a Venetian-era landmark in the Old Town of Rethymno, Crete, built in 1626 when the town needed a public water supply. Three lion-head spouts, three basins and Corinthian columns give the stone structure its distinctive form. Water still flows from the lions, though not every day. Stop to look at the carved details, take a photo or pause in the square, with cafés and tavernas nearby. The fountain is free to visit and sits among the Old Town’s narrow streets, shops and restaurants.
A Venetian water source

Rimondi Fountain was built in 1626 by the Venetian rector of Rethymno, A. Rimondi. The town depended on public fountains and aqueducts for water, and this fountain supplied a substantial share of its needs. Water was brought from Mount Vrysinas.
The fountain occupied the centre of the Venetian town, alongside public buildings including the Loggia. Its role was practical as well as civic: residents and animals came to drink from it. The fountain remains in place in the Old Town, surrounded by the streets and businesses that now draw people through the area.
Lion heads and Corinthian columns

Three lion heads form the fountain’s water spouts, directing water into three basins. Four fluted Corinthian columns rise above them, with acanthus-leaf capitals supporting an architrave. The Latin words “Liberalitatis” and “Fontes” can still be read there, and the coat of arms of Rimondi appears above the central basin.
The stonework is compact, so take a moment to look closely at the columns, inscriptions and carved details. Water still flows from the lion heads, but it is not guaranteed to be running whenever you visit.
A stop in the Old Town
The fountain stands among the narrow streets of Rethymno’s historic centre, with shops, cafés and tavernas around it. It is a natural point to pause during a walk through the Old Town, or to meet someone before continuing to other nearby sights.
The square is a popular place for photographs and can get busy. After dark, lights illuminate the fountain and its water when it is flowing. The site is free to visit and accessible at any time; the stone paving can be slippery, so shoes with a firm grip are useful.
