Milatos Cave

Milatos Cave, also called Rapas Cave, lies northeast of Milatos village in Crete.

Milatos Cave, also called Rapas Cave, lies northeast of Milatos village in Crete. A short uphill walk leads to a cave tied to a tragic episode in the Greek War of Independence, when Ottoman forces killed local villagers sheltering here. Inside, look for the chapel and memorial, then use a torch or your phone light to see the darker areas. The uneven approach and unlit interior call for care, but the route also opens onto views of the nearby valley, with eagles sometimes circling overhead.

From Milatos, follow the road signs east for about 2.5 kilometres, then continue on foot along the uphill path. The walk to the entrance takes around 10 to 15 minutes. The stones are uneven, so shoes with a firm grip are useful.

There is no lighting inside. A torch helps you see the darker sections; a phone light can also guide you. Take care underfoot and watch your head as you move through the cave. The route is short, and the nearby valley provides views along the way.
