Nikolaiviertel

Nikolaiviertel is a small historic quarter in central Berlin, beside the Spree and west of Alexanderplatz.

Nikolaiviertel is a small historic quarter in central Berlin, beside the Spree and west of Alexanderplatz. Its cobbled lanes, courtyards and pastel façades make a quieter setting for a walk among cafés, restaurants and shops. At the center is Nikolaikirche, Berlin’s oldest church, with a small museum inside. Much of the quarter was rebuilt in the 1980s after wartime destruction, so its medieval appearance is partly a reconstruction. Come for the streetscape, then pause at a riverside café or restaurant.

A historic quarter rebuilt after the war

Nikolaiviertel occupies part of Berlin’s original settlement and is considered the city’s oldest residential area. Its lanes and buildings were almost entirely destroyed during the Second World War. Much of the quarter was rebuilt in the 1980s, including structures based on historic designs and buildings relocated from elsewhere in the city. The result combines original buildings with reconstructions, giving the area a historic appearance without making every façade medieval.

The quarter’s low-rise buildings and cobbled streets sit close together, with courtyards and small squares between them. Churches rise above the surrounding roofs. The compact scale offers a different pace from nearby central Berlin, and the lanes are easy to explore on foot.

Nikolaikirche and the riverside lanes

Nikolaikirche stands at the heart of the quarter. The Gothic church is identified as Berlin’s oldest building and oldest church, and a small museum inside gives visitors another reason to step indoors. Its two spires are a landmark among the surrounding buildings.

Cafés, pubs, restaurants and shops fill the nearby streets. Some restaurants serve traditional German fare, and several cafés sit along the river. The Spree provides views from the quarter’s riverside spots, while the lanes and courtyards invite a slower walk. In the evening, street lamps light the streets and the area becomes a pleasant place to linger over a drink or meal.
