The Liebermann-Villa is the former summer home of painter Max Liebermann, set beside Lake Wannsee in Berlin. Inside, see paintings, letters and explanations that bring his work and world into focus. Outside, the garden includes birch trees, boxwood hedges and a terrace facing the lake; Liebermann painted the garden in around 200 works. The visit pairs art with a quiet lakeside setting, and the on-site cafe serves drinks and cake. Allow about an hour to explore the house and grounds.

A summer home beside Wannsee

The Liebermann-Villa stands on the shore of Lake Wannsee in Berlin. It was Max Liebermann’s summer residence. Liebermann was a German painter and printmaker, and a leading figure in German Impressionism.

The house and its grounds give context to his work. The garden is not simply a setting for the paintings: it appears in around 200 of them. Its layout has been restored to Liebermann’s early 20th-century designs, with birch trees, boxwood hedges and a terrace facing the water.

Paintings, letters and the garden

Inside, the display brings together Liebermann’s paintings, original letters and explanations. The exhibition presents its historical material in a factual way, leaving visitors room to consider it at their own pace. Liebermann’s work is part of the story of a German Jewish artist whose career was affected by the Nazi regime, which banned him.

Outside, paths lead through the garden and toward views of the lake. The birch grove and planted areas offer a different way to look at scenes that recur in Liebermann’s art. Take time to notice how the garden’s features connect with the paintings shown in the house.

Cafe and practical details

The on-site cafe serves drinks and cake, with seating on the terrace or in the garden. The shop sells honey produced on the property. For the audio guide, bring your own headphones; it is accessed on a phone.

The villa has wheelchair-accessible entrance, seating, elevator, restrooms and parking. Tickets in advance are recommended. The venue is closed on Tuesdays.
