Le mur des je t'aime

Le Mur des Je t’aime is a public artwork in Square Jehan Rictus, beside Place des Abbesses in Montmartre, Paris.

Le Mur des Je t’aime is a public artwork in Square Jehan Rictus, beside Place des Abbesses in Montmartre, Paris. Its blue enamel tiles carry “I love you” 311 times in around 250 languages, with red fragments that represent pieces of a broken heart. Pause to spot a language you know, read the calligraphy and take a photo, or sit in the small garden square. It is a brief, free stop that fits naturally into a walk around Montmartre, where cafés and streets are close by.

A wall made from words

Le Mur des Je t’aime stands in Square Jehan Rictus, beside Place des Abbesses in Montmartre. Artists Frédéric Baron and Claire Kito created the work in 2000. The wall covers 40 square metres and carries the phrase “I love you” 311 times in around 250 languages.

The idea began with Baron collecting expressions of love in languages spoken by people around him. The project grew to include words from languages and dialects around the world, including Navajo, Inuit, Bambara and Esperanto. Calligrapher Claire Kito arranged the writing for the enamel tiles.

Blue tiles and red fragments

The repeated message gives the wall its detail: look for the different scripts and find a version you can read. The red marks across the blue surface represent fragments of a broken heart. Together, the words and the heart imagery turn a simple message into a work about love across languages.

The artwork is in a small garden square, so it makes a compact pause during a Montmartre walk. Children can look for languages they recognize, and the wall gives you a distinctive backdrop for a photograph.

Planning your stop

There is no entry charge. Most visits are short: take time to read some of the inscriptions, look at the red details and take a photo before continuing through the neighbourhood. Early mornings and weekdays are suggested for a calmer visit; the small space can feel crowded at busy times.

Please leave the wall as you find it. Writing on the tiles damages the artwork. Cafés and other Montmartre sights are nearby if you want to extend your walk.
