The Grand Rocher is a 65-metre artificial mountain and landmark inside the Parc Zoologique de Paris in the 12th arrondissement. Designed by architect Charles Letrosne and built in 1934, it once held water tanks and provided a refuge for mountain animals such as mouflons. The rock is a striking feature of the zoo, visible from several points around the grounds. Its elevated observation point closed in 1982 after deterioration, and access has been only partial since renovations in 1997, so don’t plan your visit around reaching the top.

Architect Charles Letrosne designed the Grand Rocher, which was built in 1934. At 65 metres tall, the artificial mountain was more than a backdrop: it concealed water tanks and provided shelter for mountain animals, including mouflons. Its scale makes it a landmark within the Parc Zoologique de Paris, and it can be seen from several points around the city.

The rock’s observation point was once reached by a fast elevator, but it closed to the public in 1982 as the structure deteriorated. Renovation work led to partial reopening in 1997, though access to the elevated areas has remained limited. The rock sits among the zoo’s animal habitats, with giraffes and birds among the animals seen around it. Nearby, the park includes a rainforest greenhouse, picnic areas and a barefoot trail.
