Crypte Archéologique de l'İle de la Cité

Beneath the square in front of Notre-Dame, the Crypte Archéologique de l’Île de la Cité preserves traces of Paris from Roman times through the Middle Ages.

Beneath the square in front of Notre-Dame, the Crypte Archéologique de l’Île de la Cité preserves traces of Paris from Roman times through the Middle Ages. Walk among the foundations, walls and streets of ancient Lutetia, then look at pottery, tools and other finds that help explain life here long ago. Displays, video presentations and interactive elements trace how the city and the Seine changed over time. It is a quieter stop beside the cathedral, with much of the exhibition explained in both English and French.

Traces beneath the square

Archaeological remains beneath the square in front of Notre-Dame reveal parts of the settlement that preceded modern Paris. The exhibition includes foundations, walls and streets associated with Lutetia, the Roman city that developed into Paris. Some structures and objects were uncovered during excavation, offering evidence of how people lived and built in this area.

Among the remains are parts of an ancient Roman pier. Seeing it alongside the other buried structures gives the site a physical connection to the city’s earlier life by the Seine.

A history shaped by the Seine

The exhibition follows the Seine across a long span of time, from prehistoric periods through Roman and medieval Paris to the modern city. Its displays explain how people changed the river and the area around it. Video presentations and interactive elements help visitors picture earlier stages of the city, while clear labels set out what archaeologists found.

Objects recovered from the Seine, including pottery and tools, add detail to the story of daily life. English translations accompany the displays, and multimedia presentations are available in English and French.
