Atelier des Lumières is a digital art centre in a former iron foundry at 38 Rue Saint-Maur in Paris’s 11th arrondissement. Large-scale projections animate works by artists such as Van Gogh, Klimt and Picasso across the walls, floor and ceiling, accompanied by music. You can walk through the open exhibition space, pause to watch from a seat or take part in a children’s colouring activity that turns drawings into moving images. The programme changes, so check which exhibition is running before you go.

A former foundry turned digital art space

Atelier des Lumières opened in 2018 in the restored Plichon iron foundry, a former industrial site in Paris’s 11th arrondissement. The building’s high walls and expansive interior give the projections room to spread across the space. Some iron fittings and equipment remain as reminders of its earlier use.

Rather than viewing paintings in frames, you encounter digitised artworks enlarged across the walls, floor and ceiling. More than 100 video projectors are used to create the displays, with sound through the exhibition space. The images move and change with the soundtrack, surrounding you as you walk through the former foundry.

How the exhibitions work

The programme changes, with exhibitions built around artists or themes. Past presentations have included Van Gogh, Klimt, Matisse, Renoir, Chagall and Picasso. A main presentation may last about 50 minutes and can be followed by shorter films on other subjects; the format depends on the programme. Check the current exhibition details before choosing a session.

There is no fixed seating arrangement throughout the space. You can move around to see how the projections change from different positions, or sit down to watch. Some visitors choose to stay for more than one viewing, so you need not treat the presentation as a single pass through the room.

Going with children

Some exhibitions include interactive activities for children. In one, visitors colour a drawing, then watch it appear as an animated image on the walls. The activity can be enjoyable for adults too. The main presentations can contain complex ideas, so the subject and style of the current show are worth checking when planning a visit with younger children.

The venue has wheelchair-accessible entrances, seating and restrooms, as well as an assistive hearing loop. If you are sensitive to rapidly changing images, take a break when needed; the projections can feel dizzying for some people.
