Planet Ocean Montpellier

Planet Ocean Montpellier is an aquarium and planetarium under one roof in the Odysseum leisure area.

Planet Ocean Montpellier is an aquarium and planetarium under one roof in the Odysseum leisure area. The Mare Nostrum Aquarium and the Planetarium Galilée have merged here, so one visit takes you from deep-sea tanks to the universe. The complex has 24 basins with marine life from the Antarctic, the Mediterranean and tropical seas, including sharks, rays, sawfish, piranhas and penguins. Highlights include a storm simulator where you sail through rough weather and a shark tunnel. Calming sounds play through the different zones, and the signs are in two languages.

Planet Ocean Montpellier is the result of a merger. The Mare Nostrum Aquarium and the Planetarium Galilée now operate as one complex in the Odysseum leisure area.

The basins are designed so that younger and older visitors can each find something of interest. Among the newer exhibits are storm and hurricane simulators.

Route through the zones

The visit is organised into nine stops. They begin with aquatic environments, such as the Mediterranean shores, the abyss and the mangroves, and end with the Universe.

Sharks, rays, sawfish, piranhas and penguins are among the animals on display. The aquarium also breeds chimaeras on site, and visitors can watch this part of its work.

The Antarctic and tropical areas sit in contrast with the Mediterranean zones, so the route moves quickly from cold water to warm reefs.

Planning the visit

Advance tickets are recommended. The entrance, the seating and the restrooms are wheelchair accessible.

On site you will find a cafe, a gift shop and a touch tank. The signs are in two languages, which helps when you read the descriptions for each zone.
