The Deep

The Deep stands on Tower Street, close to the point where the River Hull joins the Humber Estuary. Its striking modern building opened in 2002 and is partly submerged in the surrounding water. Inside, the aquarium is arranged across three floors, with a route that takes you through different marine environments.

The displays span tropical lagoons and colder-water habitats. Large tanks hold sharks, rays and other fish, while smaller exhibits bring you closer to jellyfish and other marine life. The variety gives you plenty to pause over, and places to sit make it easy to watch the tanks without rushing.

The underwater tunnels are a highlight of the visit. Walk through with rays and sharks swimming overhead, then look for curved viewing areas that give you another angle on the larger tanks. A lift travels alongside one of the tanks, offering a moving view through the water.

Look out for penguins and endangered sawfish as you follow the route. The exhibits also include frogs and a range of other species. Displays, games and puzzles add context for children and adults, with information about ocean life and conservation. Talks about the animals are part of the experience; staff can answer questions.

Planning time for your visit

Most visits take around two to three hours, depending on how long you spend at the tanks and activities. If you want a quieter visit, a Monday morning outside school holidays has been reported as a good time to go. The attraction is suitable for families, and the building has accessible entrances, seating, restrooms and parking.

There is a café and a gift shop on site. Food costs can add up, so bringing a picnic is one way to keep spending down. You can also explore the outdoor area, including the shark statue. Tickets allow return visits for a year, and entry is free for children under three.
