The Hoe

The Hoe is a grassy headland and promenade on the Plymouth waterfront, overlooking Plymouth Sound.

The Hoe is a grassy headland and promenade on the Plymouth waterfront, overlooking Plymouth Sound. From the top you can see Drake's Island out on the water, and Smeaton's Tower, the lighthouse, stands on the Hoe itself. Walk the promenade past the war memorials, sit on a bench with a picnic, or wander the open lawns. Cafes and restaurants are a short walk away, and the city centre is a reasonable walk.

Drake, the Spanish fleet and the bowling green

The Hoe
The Hoe

A story says Francis Drake first spotted the Spanish fleet from this grassy headland. He was supposedly finishing a game of bowls when he saw it.

The green where he played is thought to have been close to the spot where his statue now stands. These details come from tradition, so treat them as legend rather than record.

Memorials along the promenade

The Hoe

The wide promenade behind the Hoe is lined with villas on one side and many war memorials on the other. They commemorate the world wars and other conflicts that affected the people of this maritime city.

Many people come here to pay respects to those who died, so a quiet walk past the memorials is a courtesy to them.

Smeaton's Tower and the view

The lighthouse on the Hoe is Smeaton's Tower, and you can climb it. From the top, the view takes in the sound and Drake's Island.

Admission to the tower has been £8 for adults and £4 for children, so check current prices before you go. On a clear day, the view from the top is easier to appreciate.

Picnics, mini golf and nearby play

There is plenty of room to spread a blanket with a view of Plymouth Sound, and benches face the water. Putters on the Hoe, a mini golf course, is here, along with a sensory garden.

West Hoe Park, a short distance away, has a large children's play area with a miniature railway, a putting green, crazy golf, trampolines, a merry-go-round and a bouncy castle.
