The IFS Cloud Cable Car crosses the Thames between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks, with terminals near the O2 and ExCeL.

The IFS Cloud Cable Car crosses the Thames between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks, with terminals near the O2 and ExCeL. From the cabin, look out over the river, Canary Wharf, the Thames Barrier and the wider London skyline. The ride takes around five to 10 minutes, and recorded commentary adds context as you travel. It works as a short scenic trip or a way to cross the river; you can pay with an Oyster card or contactless payment.

The route across the Thames

The IFS Cloud Cable Car links Greenwich Peninsula on the south side of the river with the Royal Docks to the north. The terminals sit near the O2 Arena and ExCeL, so the ride can fit around a visit to either area. The line runs for about 1 kilometre and forms part of Transport for London’s network.

It is a two-terminal crossing, not a way to reach multiple stops along the river. If you are using it as transport, plan how you will continue from the other terminal. The Docklands Light Railway serves the Royal Docks area, while North Greenwich Underground station is near the Greenwich Peninsula terminal.

Views from the cabin

The elevated route gives you a broad view across the Thames and east London. Look towards Canary Wharf and the Docklands, the Thames Barrier and the O2. On a clear day, the view can extend to landmarks including St Paul’s Cathedral and The Shard.

The crossing takes around five to 10 minutes. Commentary plays during the ride, adding information as the cabin travels above the river. For a longer outing, you can make a round trip and see the river from both directions. Sunset is a good time to aim for if the sky is clear, as the city begins to light up.

Tickets and payment

You can use an Oyster card or contactless payment on the cable car. Tickets can also be bought in advance through the official booking site. If you are travelling at a peak time, booking ahead may help you avoid queuing at the station; compare any fast-track option with your plans before paying extra.

The cabins are described as spacious and can accommodate up to six people. The journey can suit families looking for a short activity near the O2, or anyone wanting a different view of the Thames without committing to a longer attraction.
