Little Venice is a canal-side neighbourhood in Westminster, north of Paddington, where the Grand Union and Regent’s canals meet. Colourful houseboats, tree-lined paths and boats converted into cafés or restaurants give the waterways a quieter feel than nearby city streets. Follow the towpath towards Paddington or Camden, pause for a drink by the water, or take a boat trip to Camden Market. It is a good choice for a slower walk and a change of scene, though cyclists also use parts of the canal path.

Where the canals meet

Little Venice lies just north of Paddington, at the meeting point of the Grand Union and Regent’s canals. The neighbourhood was once known as Paddington Broadwater. Its present name may trace back to Margery Allingham’s 1934 detective novel Death of a Ghost, which used “Little Venice” for a house beside the canal.

The waterways shape the area’s character. Brightly painted boats line the banks, and some have been adapted into cafés, restaurants or other spaces. Paths follow the water through greenery, offering a quieter route through this part of London.

Walking the towpath

You can start near Warwick Avenue station or Paddington and follow the canal towards Camden. The walk between Paddington and Little Venice is a way to explore the neighbourhood at an easy pace; the main canal stretch is short, but there are longer routes if you want to keep going. The towpath also connects with walks towards Royal Oak and, farther along the waterway, Limehouse.

For a different way to travel, boat trips run between Little Venice and Camden Market. There are also boat cafés and places to eat beside the water, so you can break up a walk with a stop. On busy days, remember that cyclists use sections of the towpath too.
