Keats at Wentworth Place

Keats House was once known as Wentworth Place. John Keats lived here from 1818 to 1820, a period in which he wrote some of his best-known poetry, including “Ode to a Nightingale.” The Hampstead home is now a museum devoted to his life and work.

Keats also fell in love with Fanny Brawne, who lived next door. The house’s displays place his writing in the context of his relationships and the short life that ended in Rome at the age of 25.

Rooms, objects and garden

The museum’s collection includes paintings, prints and objects connected with Keats and his contemporaries. Some rooms contain furnishings, including his bed and sofa; others have display cases and artwork. A notebook from his time in medical training is another personal item to look for.

Take time with the information panels to follow the story of Keats’ life and work. Outside, the house’s garden provides space to pause. Hampstead Heath is nearby, so the museum can be combined with time in the surrounding area.
