Security is strict: bring photo ID, travel with only a very small bag and expect some areas to be off-limits for photography.

A working court with a long history

The Central Criminal Court is commonly called the Old Bailey, after the street where it stands. It is a significant London court, and its history is closely tied to criminal trials in Britain. Guided tours add context through accounts of the building and notable cases heard there.

The court continues to operate, so access depends on its work. Tours take place on Saturdays when court is not in session, giving visitors a chance to see parts of the building that are not generally open to the public.

What the guided tour includes

The tour visits Courtroom 1, an original courtroom, and compares it with a newer courtroom. It also includes the cells and the Judges’ dining room. Guides explain courtroom rules and the meaning of procedures and terms used in the building.

Security checks take place before entry. Bring photo ID, keep your bag very small and leave your mobile phone behind. Photography is not allowed in the courtrooms, cells or Judges’ dining room; general areas have different rules, so follow the instructions given during your visit.
