Abbot Hall is an art gallery in a Grade I-listed Georgian house on the banks of the River Kent in Kendal. Built in 1759 and converted into a gallery in 1962, it brings together British art, including the UK’s largest collection of paintings by George Romney, alongside works by J.M.W. Turner and modern artists. Changing exhibitions add new work to explore across the gallery’s light-filled rooms. There is also a basement cafe for coffee and cake, and the nearby ruins of Kendal Castle are in view.
A Georgian house turned gallery

Abbot Hall was built in 1759 and became an art gallery in 1962. The Grade I-listed house stands beside the River Kent in Kendal, with views towards the ruins of Kendal Castle. Before its life as a gallery, the site was associated with a medieval residence for abbots visiting from St Mary’s Abbey in York.
The historic rooms now hold a mix of permanent displays and temporary exhibitions. Light-filled galleries spread across two floors, giving the house a setting that feels different from a purpose-built museum.
George Romney and British art

The permanent collection spans British art from the 18th to the 20th century, with landscape and identity among its themes. George Romney is a particular focus: Abbot Hall holds the largest collection of his paintings in the UK. His portraits sit alongside works by other artists, including J.M.W. Turner.
Displays also bring older and contemporary art together. Temporary exhibitions have included prints by David Hockney and work by Turner Prize nominee George Shaw, as well as digital animation and contemporary ceramics. The programme changes, so check what is on during your visit.
