Dover Castle stands on a hill above the town and port of Dover, on the Kent coast, and is often described as England's largest castle. Its history runs from an Iron Age fort and a Roman lighthouse through the castle that William the Conqueror began and Henry II rebuilt. The Great Tower, the Secret Wartime Tunnels and the battlements are the main draws, and the views reach across the port and the Channel. Give yourself time for the grounds, the Roman lighthouse and the church of St Mary in Castro.

From Iron Age fort to English Heritage site

The hilltop was fortified in the Iron Age at the latest. William the Conqueror had the first castle built here, on the site of that earlier fort, and it was later reused as an Anglo-Saxon burgh. Henry II redeveloped the castle from after 1180 as a fortified palace, close to the Channel and to Canterbury, a major pilgrimage destination.

Henry VIII adapted the castle for artillery. In the Napoleonic Wars, gun positions and casemates were cut into the cliff. The site is now managed by English Heritage.

The Great Tower and royal chambers

The Great Tower is the centrepiece of the medieval castle. Its furnished rooms present life at Henry II's court, and costumed actors explain how the household lived. Other chambers in the castle hosted royal visits, among them those of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

The tower has spiral stairs to the top, and the view from there takes in Dover, the port and the Channel. The battlements can be walked as a separate route along the walls, with the same sea views.

The Secret Wartime Tunnels

The tunnels served as a military headquarters and an underground hospital during the Second World War. The hospital area shows the injuries of those treated there, which makes it one of the more sobering parts of the visit. The tunnel tour includes a recreation of the Dunkirk evacuation, known as Operation Dynamo, with projections and real film footage.

Tunnel tours are guided. Tickets can run out, so book ahead and allow time before your slot. The lift serves the tunnels but does not reach the medieval parts of the castle.

The Roman lighthouse and St Mary in Castro

The Roman lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse in the country. It was later adapted as the bell tower of the Church of St Mary in Castro, which stands within the castle walls.

The Port War Signalling Station is one of the places where visitors can learn Morse code. A Bunker Escape Room, inspired by the Cold War, can be booked for an extra cost.

Getting around and what to bring

The site covers about 80 acres of grounds, so walking between areas adds up. The main entrance is reached up a long flight of stairs. A ramp at the back serves wheelchairs and buggies, but that entrance gives access only to the lower floor of the castle. A land train with a wheelchair lift helps move between areas.

Dogs are welcome in the grounds on a lead. A small play area for children sits outside the castle, and family activities run at weekends and during school holidays. There is a cafe with outside seating and a gift shop.
