Christians Kirke

Christians Kirke is a Baroque church on Strandgade in Copenhagen’s Christianshavn district.

Christians Kirke is a Baroque church on Strandgade in Copenhagen’s Christianshavn district. Its exterior is restrained, but inside, tiered seating gives the space the feel of a theatre, earning it the nickname “Theatre Church.” Look up to the high ceiling, galleries, chandeliers and decorated organ, and notice the detailed woodwork and pulpit. A model of the ship Livingston stands by the entrance. The church is also used for classical music concerts, so check whether an event is scheduled if you want to explore quietly.

A church with theatre-style seating

Christians Kirke was designed by Nicolai Eigtved in a late Baroque style and built in 1758. Its layout sets it apart from a conventional church interior: galleries and rows of seating rise around the central space, giving the room a theatrical quality. That arrangement is the reason the church is also known as the Theatre Church.

The building began as a church for Copenhagen’s German community. It later became a parish connected with the Danish National Church. Its name refers to Christian IV, the king associated with the founding of Christianshavn and the construction of several buildings around Copenhagen.

Details inside the church

Look across the galleries and toward the pulpit to see how the interior’s levels and carved woodwork shape the space. Tall windows bring soft daylight into the church, while chandeliers and the decorated pipe organ add detail above the seating. The model of the ship Livingston is displayed at the entrance.

Some of the decoration includes signs associated with Freemasonry. Take time to look closely rather than relying only on the view from the entrance; details appear across the church’s interior.

Services and concerts

The church has hosted classical music concerts and other artistic events as well as church services. A concert gives you a different way to experience the interior, while a non-event visit is better suited to looking around at your own pace. Check the church website for current visitor information before setting out.
