Palacio Cousiño is a 19th-century mansion at Dieciocho 438 in Santiago, built for the Cousiño-Goyenechea family, among the city’s wealthiest families of the period. A guided visit takes you through rooms that reveal the family’s life and the scale of their wealth. Much of the ground floor’s original furniture remains, giving the interiors a strong sense of continuity with the house’s past. Tours are the only way to visit, so arrange a place before you go and arrive on time for your scheduled visit.
A mansion built for the Cousiño family

Palacio Cousiño was built in the late 19th century for Isidora Goyenechea and Luis Cousiño. Luis did not live to see the finished house; his widow lived there with their six children. The family’s wealth came from silver mines and agriculture, and the mansion gives a sense of the resources they commanded.
The building covers 3,500 square metres, with two floors and 12 rooms. It was designed as a family residence, and its scale and interiors show how Santiago’s elite lived during the city’s mining and agricultural boom years.
What you see inside

The ground floor retains nearly all of its original furnishings, a notable part of the visit. Each of the 12 rooms has its own character, and the surviving furniture helps connect the interiors to the family who lived there. The palace is also known for elegant furnishings brought from France.
Among its early modern conveniences was one of Chile’s first elevators. Together, the rooms and details give the guided visit a focus beyond the building’s size: they show the comforts and display of wealth available to a prominent family in late 19th-century Santiago.
