Museo de la Moda

Museo de la Moda occupies the former home of the Yarur-Bascuñán family in Vitacura. The building dates to 1962 and was designed by Chilean architects in a style influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. Its rooms retain original furnishings, giving the museum a domestic setting as well as space for exhibitions.

The museum opened in 2007. Jorge Yarur Bascuñán, whose father was a Chilean textile businessman, founded the institution to collect, preserve and display clothing. Pieces in its collection have been donated or acquired at international auctions.

Changing exhibitions and fashion history

The exhibitions are small and change over time, so the subject on view is an important part of deciding whether to visit. Displays have included women’s dresses dating to the 1600s, as well as exhibitions focused on subjects beyond fashion. The museum’s name does not guarantee that a large selection of historical garments will be on display during your visit.

When the exhibition aligns with your interests, the objects can offer a close look at clothing and design across different periods. Check the museum’s website for the current theme before making the trip. A guided visit may be arranged in advance for visitors interested in fashion or conservation.

The house, courtyard and café

Take time to look at the furnished rooms as well as the exhibition spaces. The house provides a view of the lifestyle of Chile’s wealthy families in the period before the political upheaval associated with Salvador Allende’s government and the military coup that followed.

The courtyard holds a pink 1958 Ford Thunderbird once driven by Yarur’s wife. There is also a café on the premises, useful for a pause before or after viewing the house.
